With flatter tournament payout structures, you don't necessarily need to get to first place to win. This means you don't have to ‘aim for the top' to make money.

So, tournament strategies that require aggressive play to build a good stack to win at the final table won't be required. You can utilise a strategy whereas when you are coming up to the button you tighten up to prevent yourself from loosing.

You can play a lot looser, carefree, or conservative and ‘slow' if you are just aiming to get to the money on a flat tournament payout structure. You don't necessarily have to take chances or push yourself to get far ahead.

Poker Tournament Strategies For Steep Tournament Payout Structures

With steep tournament payout structures you really have to aim for first place. In order to do this you will need a great stack.

You will generally need to be aggressive and focus on building your stack strong so you can last those last few miles to get to the top. Stealing blinds and antes will be critical to achieve this.

You might have to make some hard decisions and take some chances to double up to get far ahead. Any lead you can get will be well worth it.

So as you can see, you should be using very different poker tournament strategies depending on your goals for money remuneration and also how the tournament payout structure is configured.
